What is Psychology? A. Clinical Psychology, subfield Focuses = Study and treatment of psychological/ mental disorders PHD in Psycho or Psyd in Psycho largest subfield. B. Clinical Psych versus psychiatry subfield of medicine, Focus = study & treatment of psycho disorders. MD. "Medical models" of mental illness --> depression, disease drugs. "Behavior models" of psychological disorders --> disorders of behavior and thinking, C. Definition of Psychology. The scientific study of behavior and the mind. II. Goals of Psychology A. Description: to describe behavior and natural world. ie.We're all better than average biasis (WABTA bias) B. Explanation Why do things happen as they do? C. Control: having control over research settings( eg. designing, conducting experiments) to test whether or not our explanations (ie. theories) are correct. D.Application of Science knowledge WABTA Bias: Applied in Business: Performance Appraisal and Review (PAR) Manger sits down with employees talk about goals and influences pay raises. "Merit Pay" III.Basic VS. Applied Research. Basic Research = Main goal is to gain knowledge for its own sake to build a body of knowledge about some phenomenon.
